Social expenditure and other related time-series

These files contain annual series on education, health, social security, and other fiscal series for 1950-2008. The information corresponds to 32 countries, divided according to their per capita income level into "upper middle-income countries" and "middle income countries," according to the typology used by the World Bank. The first group includes Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Mexico, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Turkey, Venezuela, and Uruguay. By the end of the 20th century, the Latin American economies are comparable to the four Asian economies. The second group is made up of Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The Economic History group of the Instituto de Economía conducted a study that resulted in the compilation and organization of the data. Details on sources and the main conceptual and methodological criteria applied for the compatibility of the series and their dynamics can be found in Azar, P. and Fleitas, S. (2012) "Historical database on Social Public Spending", Working Paper 22/12, Institute of Economics, FCEA-UdelaR.
