Agricultural, Environmental, and Natural Resources Economics

The goal is to improve public understanding of the connections between the agricultural economy and the intersection of economy, the environment, and natural resources in socio-ecological systems. Its work contributes to comprehend how these systems work and support the design of proposals for public or private interventions to promote sustainable growth and development. It contributes to and relies on local and international interdisciplinary and inter-institutional networks.

The research is organized around the following themes: i) land use and pressures on natural resources in an era of climate change; development of economic and integrated models for the study of socio-ecological systems, ii) functioning and transmission of prices in agricultural chains, iii) bioeconomy as a model for product development in Uruguay, and iv) study of the impact of production risk (particularly climate risk) and instruments for its management.

The team is in charge of the undergraduate course in Agricultural and Natural Resources Economics (undergraduate degree in Economics, FCEA) and the master’s degree course in Environmental Economics (Master's degree in Economics, FCEA). Also, members of the team teach at the undergraduate level at the School of Economics and Administration (Theories of Economic Development; Foresight Workshop; Economics and Business Strategy) and the School of Social Sciences (Economics of Innovation). At the graduate level, members participate in the Economics of Innovation course in the master’s degree in Economics at the FCEA and serve as thesis mentors for master's and doctorate students
